Background

The bionic eye has been in development since 1993 and it just got its approval from the FDA in February 2013. It is called the Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System, made by Second Sight Medical Products. It has already started in the US at clinical centers in 12 markets (Moore, 2013).

Features

It helps patients with total vision loss like retinitis pigmentosa, to see forms and perceptions with light by detecting dark and light to identify location of objects or movements. It bypasses the damaged cones and rods in the retina (Dobson, n.d.). They will be able to see with up to 20 degrees of view (Sokol, n.d.). This improves their lives and helps them to be more independent. Furthermore, this device is safe and the benefits from using this are far more than the risks of injury or illness.
